At Upperhill Cardiovascular Center, our Holter monitoring is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to continuously record the electrical activity of the heart over an extended period, typically 24 to 48 hours. This portable device, worn on a belt or strap, consists of electrodes placed on the chest that capture the heart’s rhythm and produce an electrocardiogram (ECG). Holter monitors are particularly valuable for detecting intermittent arrhythmias or other heart conditions that may not be evident during a standard ECG. Patients are encouraged to maintain their normal daily activities during the monitoring period, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of heart function in various real-life scenarios.
During the monitoring period, patients keep a diary of their activities and any symptoms they experience, such as palpitations, dizziness, or chest pain. After the monitoring period, the device is returned to the healthcare provider, who analyzes the collected data alongside the patient’s diary entries. This analysis helps identify any irregular heartbeats or other abnormalities, providing crucial information for diagnosing conditions like atrial fibrillation or ischemic heart disease. Holter monitoring is a valuable tool in cardiology, offering insights into heart health that guide treatment decisions and enhance patient care.
