At Upperhill Cardiovascular Center, our Angioplasty and stenting services are minimally invasive procedures used to treat narrowed or blocked arteries, particularly in cases of coronary artery disease. During angioplasty, a thin catheter with a balloon at its tip is inserted into the affected artery. Once in place, the balloon is inflated to widen the narrowed section, restoring blood flow. Following this, a stent—a small mesh tube—is often placed in the artery to help keep it open and prevent re-narrowing. The combination of angioplasty and stenting is particularly effective in alleviating symptoms such as chest pain (angina) and improving overall heart function.
The procedure is typically performed in a catheterization lab under local anesthesia and sedation. Patients can usually go home the same day or after a short hospital stay. Recovery involves monitoring for any complications and following a prescribed regimen of medications to prevent blood clots and manage risk factors. Angioplasty and stenting have been shown to significantly improve patients’ quality of life by enhancing blood flow and reducing the risk of heart attacks, making them essential tools in modern cardiovascular care.
